A tragic overnight crash on Interstate 75 South in Marietta, Georgia, has claimed the life of 47-year-old Gordon Fields, leaving family members, friends, and the wider Cobb County community mourning a sudden and devastating loss.
According to authorities, the fatal collision occurred shortly before 1:00 a.m. near North Marietta Parkway, in an area that had already been impacted by heavy congestion following an earlier accident that temporarily shut down all southbound lanes. Emergency crews were still working to clear the previous crash while traffic remained backed up along the interstate bridge.
Investigators reported that one of the tractor-trailers involved, operated by 29-year-old Mayki Marcelin of Davenport, Florida, remained stopped in a travel lane even after traffic had begun moving again. A second tractor-trailer, driven by 35-year-old Daniel Granados of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, approached the area and attempted to avoid the stationary truck. In doing so, his vehicle sideswiped the trailer.
Moments later, Gordon Fields approached the same stretch of roadway in a white Volkswagen. Authorities say his vehicle collided with the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer with significant force before he could avoid the obstruction.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Fields was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. No other serious injuries were immediately reported. Both truck drivers remained at the scene and are cooperating with investigators.
The crash caused additional disruption along Interstate 75, one of metro Atlanta’s busiest transportation corridors, particularly known for heavy overnight freight traffic. Incidents in this area frequently lead to dangerous congestion and extended delays.
Authorities are continuing a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials are examining traffic flow, visibility conditions, vehicle positioning, and driver response times. At this stage, it remains unclear whether speed, distraction, fatigue, or other factors contributed to the collision.
No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
