Windsor shooting today, East-End incident – Police Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Authorities in Windsor are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the city’s east-end that has prompted a formal review by Ontario’s independent police watchdog.
According to the Windsor Police Service, officers responded to a reported robbery shortly after 6 p.m. in the 3200 block of Sandwich Street. The suspect was later located near Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street West, where police encountered a man allegedly armed with a knife.
During the confrontation, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. The individual was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The area remained secured for several hours as investigators processed the scene and gathered evidence.
Because the incident involved police use of force resulting in serious injury, the case has been taken over by the Special Investigations Unit (Ontario). The SIU is responsible for independently reviewing incidents involving police where there is serious injury or death.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a significant police presence shortly after the confrontation. Nearby streets were temporarily closed while investigators documented the scene and collected forensic evidence.
Officials have confirmed that no further operational details will be released by Windsor Police while the SIU investigation remains active. Authorities are urging patience as investigators work to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting, including reviewing witness statements and any available video footage.
The incident has left many residents shaken, as officer-involved shootings often raise difficult questions and concerns within communities while investigations are ongoing. Authorities emphasize that all findings will be determined through the independent review process.
Officials are asking anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward to assist with the investigation. Additional updates are expected as the SIU continues its work.
